) opened its Internet doors for business with the signing of the final modifications to the Unified Local Area Network Architecture II (ULANA ULANA Unified Local Area Network Architecture  II) contract July 18. Government customers worldwide will now be able to order price-competitive network products and engineering services electronically from their desktop, minimizing paperwork and streamlining the procurement process.

The two-year indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract, valued at $633 million with three one-year options, was awarded to both TRW and EDS (Electronic Data Systems, Plano, TX, www.eds.com) Founded in 1962 by H. Ross Perot (independent candidate for the President of the U.S. in 1992), EDS is the largest outsourcing and data processing services organization in the country.  in December 1994 by the U.S. Air Force Headquarters Standard Systems Group, Montgomery, Ala. The two-and-a-half year delay in TRW's performance on the contract, caused by a protest that was subsequently denied, ended in January. Since then, the ULANA II team has brought its product offering up to date. TRW plans to refresh the technologies monthly to ensure state-of-the-art solutions are available to its customers.

Under the contract, TRW serves as the systems integrator in providing network products and engineering services to government customers worldwide from the Air Force, Army, Navy, Defense Logistics Agency Noun 1. "The ULANA II contract was designed by the Air Force to simplify the acquisition of network hardware, software and worldwide engineering services for the federal government," said Jack Distaso, vice president of military and tactical systems and telecommunications, TRW Systems Integration Group.

In addition to providing the electronic capability to purchase items online, minimizing paperwork and speeding up the procurement process, TRW also provides on-site network engineering services. These services include requirements analysis, site surveys, system design, network installation and test, and complete life cycle support, all coordinated from TRW's San Antonio network engineering offices.

ULANA II was preceded by ULANA I, a similar program in the late 1980's (also awarded to both TRW and EDS) that provided commercial off-the-shelf products and network engineering services for the Air Force.
