, Redondo Beach, Calif., is being awarded a $48,700,000 cost-plus award-fee contract modification to provide for design activities, including hardware and software modifications, necessary to incorporate the FT1394a data interface into the Crosstrack Infrared Sounder and the Visible/Infrared Imager/Radiometer Suite (VIIRS VIIRS Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite ) Sensors supporting the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS NPOESS National Polar-Orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (US NOAA) ) spacecraft acquisition and operation effort. This effort also includes integration of Redundant Dood Latches and Telescope Launch Locks into the VIIRS sensors. The NPOESS program is a joint Department of Defense Department of Commerce, National Aeronautics and Space Administration National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), civilian agency of the U.S. federal government with the mission of conducting research and developing operational programs in the areas of space exploration, artificial satellites (see satellite, artificial),  endeavor. The locations of performance are Raytheon Co. Electronic Systems, Santa Barbara Remote Sensing, Goleta, Calif., (47 percent), and other locations. At this time, no funds have been obligated. This work will be complete by March 2005. Solicitation began September 2002 and negotiations were completed in September 2002. The Headquarters Space and Missile Systems Center Based out of Los Angeles Air Force Base in California, the Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) is a part of Air Force Space Command of the United States Air Force. Its mission is to conduct research and development of U.S. military outer space and missile systems. , Los Angeles is the contracting activity ((F04701-02-C-0502).
