TRUCKS HIT BY SNIPER FIRE ENTERING PEABODY COAL COMPANY'S HAWTHORN MINE

HENDERSON, Ky., June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- At approximately 8:00 a.m. today, three trucks owned by Cowden Trucking, Inc. were hit by sniper fire as they entered Peabody Coal Company's Hawthorn Mine. The vehicles, on a routine rock delivery, were struck just west of the Hawthorn construction entrance on County Road 575 South in Sullivan County, Indiana.
The first truck, hit in the cab, has a bullet lodged in its fiberglass body. The second and third trucks were each hit in the radiator.
The drivers of the three vehicles were not injured.
It was the sixth major incident involving sabotage or vandalism that has occurred against Peabody Coal in the last three months.
In early May, a 3.5 mile section of conveyor belt was destroyed at Peabody Coal's Marissa Mine in Illinois costing the company approximately $500,000. Last week, a second conveyor belt was sabotaged near Peabody Coal's Camp No. 9 facility.
Hawthorn Mine is one of three Peabody Coal Company mines called out on strike last week by the United Mine Workers of America President Richard Trumka.
Today's shooting is the most violent incident to date. Local, state and federal authorities are investigating.
During the 1984-85 strike against A.T. Massey Coal Company, a non- union coal-truck driver was killed by gunfire.
