The 6:10 a.m. crash caused minimal delays for northbound traffic, which was routed onto the freeway shoulders to bypass the jackknifed truck, Sweeney said. But southbound traffic was backed up for as far as 10 miles as motorists slowed to look at the wreckage.

Traffic also was slowed on southbound Interstate 5 near Gavin Canyon, where motorists slowed down to read a freeway message sign reporting the crash, so officers had the message turned off.

CHP officials said the crash occurred where the Antelope Valley Freeway narrows from four lanes to three and a car-pool lane ends.

Welch had changed from the slow lane to the next one in anticipation of the freeway narrowing, officials said. Another vehicle passed him in the slow lane, then came up behind another big rig in the same lane and darted between the two, in front of Welch, Sweeney said.
