CHP officials said the crash occurred where the Antelope Valley Freeway narrows from four lanes to three and a car-pool lane ends. Welch had changed from the slow lane to the next lane in anticipation of the right lane ending, officials said. Another vehicle passed him in the slow lane, then came up behind another big rig in the same lane, and darted between the two, in front of Welch, Sweeney said.
