The crossing warnings were working properly, he said.

Deputies said the 51-car Union Pacific train was traveling north when the engineer and conductor noticed the pickup truck driving west on Avenue J toward the railroad crossing.

The train crew said the truck appeared to be slowing down and might have locked up its tires in a skid as it crashed through the lowered crossing arm. The truck came to stop on the railroad tracks and about 15 seconds later the train hit it, deputies said.

The conductor told deputies he could see the driver's face as the man looked over and realized a train was about to hit him.

The engineer put the train into full-emergency braking, but it hit the truck and pushed it 1,500 feet along the tracks, deputies said.

The train suffered only minor damage to a front light. Neither train crewman was injured.

Neither dead man was carrying identification and there was a question about who the truck belonged to, Risinger said.
