Part of the mission of the Orange County Light Opera Company is to present educational shows in environmental venues. The nautical Ventura County Maritime Museum, a favorite field trip for teachers and students, is a perfect site for this 90-minute musical cruise.

Authenticity is the hallmark of ``Two Years Before the Mast: Songs of the Sailors,'' which was carefully researched, co-authored and produced by the show's music director, Marti Klein.

``This is very much a workshop,'' said Klein of the production. Adherence to the educational and environmental goals of the organization played a large part in the development of the show. Much attention was paid to proper presentation of the music and material. One of the actors, Gilman Carver, worked as a professional chantey chantey or shanty (both: shăn`tē), work song with marked rhythm, particularly one sung by a group of sailors while hoisting sail or anchor or pushing the capstan.  singer prior to joining the cast. The singing actors quickly transform the minimal set into a work of living art, as they sing of tragedies and triumphs as sea, loves lost and loves found, pirates and captains and the stately vessels that once graced our California shoreline.
