TROUBLE IN PARADISE RANCH MOBILE HOME PARK RESIDENTS PROTEST $100-A-MONTH RENT HIKE, UPKEEP.

Byline: Bhavna Mistry Staff Writer

CASTAIC - Surrounded by serene hills and far removed from city life, Paradise Ranch Mobile Home Park may seem like heaven, but residents who live there say it's anything but.

They complain that the water that comes from their tap is discolored dis·col·or

Owners who purchased the park three years ago have plans to expand the park, adding 30 new lots along some of the hillsides and in an area where residents were once allowed to keep their motor homes.

The residents, who met Sunday to air their complaints, say the landlord is raising the rent by $100, a 25 percent increase.

``It's just too much,'' said Danya Nordenstrom, who has lived with her husband and three children at the park for seven years. ``At this time in our economy, we just can't afford it.''

Attempts to discuss the situation Sunday with the owners or on-site managers were unsuccessful.

But in May the owners said they had already spent $1.4 million for repairs and upgrades at the park and have plans for more upgrades.

They said they needed increased rent money to pay for further renovation and planned new construction.

Residents say more needs to be done before they are willing to meet the rent increase.

``We wouldn't mind the rent increase if they did the work they said they were going to do,'' said Bruce Hill Bruce Edward Hill (born February 29, 1964 in Fort Dix, New Jersey), is a former professional American football player who selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth round of the 1987 NFL Draft. The last rent increase at the park was about three to four years ago when the rent went from $375 a month to $400. The proposed change to take effect in April will make the payments $500 a month.

``I moved here following a promise of a better park, better water and a children's playground,'' said Sharon Jewett, who lives with her 10-year-old son. ``But it hasn't happened.''

For tenants, the biggest problem comes with water. Parents say they are losing their hair because of the water's high chemical concentrations and that their children suffer from rashes and excessive dry skin.

``They're things that we have asked for that just don't get done,'' Jewett said. ``It's just not fair for them to ask for more money but not do the things they said they were going to do.''
