TROJANS FEELING YOUNG IN WIN GUARD HAS 24 POINTS IN ROUT OF THE CITADEL USC 74, THE CITADEL 58.

Byline: MATTHEW KREDELL Staff Writer

Nick Young faked to the basket, took a step back and freed himself to sink a long jumper with the shot clock winding down early in the first half.

That was the initial indication that this was a different Young than the one who played in the season's first two games.

USC had planned to build an on-campus indoor arena for over 100 years. Before the Galen Center, USC basketball had been played at a variety of locations, including the neighboring Shrine Auditorium stage, the old Pan-Pacific Auditorium in the Fairfax District, and since

``I haven't been myself out there lately,'' Young said. ``... Not having Gabe (Pruitt), the big tragedy with Ryan (Francis) and having a lot of freshmen out there put a lot of pressure on me as a leader.''

Young scored a game-high 24 points, including 19 in the first half, making 8of 9 shots. He might have had a chance at besting his career high of 33 points, but he didn't play the final 10 minutes.

That left Young trying to pick up the slack for two players.

After leading the Trojans with an average of 17.3 points last season, Young scored a total of 26 in USC's first two games this season. He had made just 10of26 field goals and reached the foul line foul line

Everything was working for Young, who was going strong to the basket, posting up and hitting his outside shots. He made all six of his first-half field goals.

``I felt good coming in,'' Young said. ``I felt my teammates and coaches were trying to lift me up.''

Young also set up his teammates. He caught a pass from Dwight Lewis on a fastbreak and made a quick one-handed pass back to Lewis for a dunk to put the Trojans ahead by 22 midway through the second half.

Floyd said in the preseason that Young's added strength would help him get to the line more, what he called a must for top scorers.

``He was aggressive trying to get into the lane,'' Floyd said. ``I thought his shot selection was terrific.''

USC (2-1) outrebounded The Citadel 30-18 and had five blocks.

However, Floyd was disappointed with the Trojans' 26 turnovers, and said a much better effort will be needed to beat Long Beach State on Friday.
