TRIPLE-DIGIT HEAT TO REVISIT OVER WEEKEND AIR PRESSURE BUILDS OVER SOUTHLAND.

Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  residents got an anxiously awaited respite from the menacing tropical heat wave Thursday as temperatures cooled to the upper 90s in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

But the oppressive heat that has plagued the Southland over the past few days is expected to return over the weekend, with highs predicted in the mid-90s today and triple digits Saturday in the Valley, forecasters said.

``By Saturday, we should see less cloudiness and more heat because of a building high pressure system,'' said National Weather Service specialist Stuart Seto.

And while the prognosis might increase comfort by a few degrees in some areas, there is still reason to worry about the cranked-up electricity usage caused by the hot weather, officials said.

California's Independent System Operator declared a Stage Two emergency for the fourth consecutive day Thursday after a power generator failure in Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern  reduced production by about 400 megawatts, said Lorie O'Donley, a spokeswoman for the agency that oversees the state's power grid.

During a Stage Two emergency, called when power reserves drop below 5 percent, power suppliers can temporarily cut electricity to larger customers, in return for discounts, in order to avoid overloads that could result in power outages.

``Our usage actually went up very slightly from Wednesday,'' said Tom Boyd of Southern California Edison. ``Until temperatures significantly drop, we still need people to conserve.''
