TRIMBLE NAVIGATION SIGNS $850,000 GEODETIC SURVEYOR
AGREEMENT WITH CALIFORNIA'S DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Trimble Navigation Ltd. (NASDAQ: TRMB) announced that it has been awarded a contract from California's Department of Transportation (DOT), for 46 units of the company's newest and most advanced surveying system, a system that is setting new standards for both precision and productivity. The Geodetic Surveyor(TM) (4000SSE), uses Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites and Trimble's FastStatic(TM) surveying technique to establish precise control points faster than a crew with a total station. Charles Trimble, chief executive officer and a founder of Trimble Navigation said, "The key advantage of the Geodetic Surveyor(TM) is its ability to provide high performance with or without P-code, protecting the customer's investment in GPS technology."
The receiver systems will be distributed to Caltrans districts throughout the state. Caltrans builds and maintains the state-owned elements of California's transportation system. Included under the agency's jurisdiction are state freeways, bridges and commuter trains, among others. Trimble has been the major supplier of GPS survey systems to Caltrans since 1987.
 GPS Survey Objectives
The chief purpose of Caltrans GPS surveys is to establish accurate geodetic horizontal control for transportation improvement projects. This control is used by Caltrans surveyors for locating transportation facilities. And the quality of subsequent detailed surveys is dependent upon the geodetic control. Trimble's parallel P-code, 6th Observable(TM) and FastStatic(TM) provide capabilities that allow surveyors to complete a survey faster and more efficiently. This breakthrough technology enables the surveyor to utilize more of the information from the GPS so the time to complete designated projects is reduced. John Fundus, a Caltrans official said, "The Geodetic Surveyor(TM) system will be our primary production tool for control surveys during the next decade."
 One-person Surveying System
The Geodetic Surveyor is a compact and lightweight one-person surveying system. And because the receiver draws only 9 watts of power, it's easy on batteries. Triple Power Inputs provide three simultaneously connected, keyboard-selectable power sources. These may include the tripod mount for dual camcorder batteries, additional external batteries and the Office Support Module. Automatic switching between these sources provides an uninterruptible power source (UPS) for fail-safe operation. "What used to take one hour to complete, now only takes ten minutes with this highly accurate system," said Ken Mooyman, Surveying & Mapping sales representative for the Western Region. "With the short occupation times available using FastStatic processing, the system will reduce the labor costs for placing local site control. A single operator can now provide the complete control for a site."
 FastStatic Testing Results
The 4000SSE Geodetic Surveyor system has been FGCS-tested and proven to be a versatile surveying system for the highest precision geodetic applications and rapid production survey operations. The test was conducted under the auspices of the Federal Geodetic Control Sub- Committee (FGCS) and the National Geodetic Survey (NGS), which have established a reliable framework of control stations to test and verify quoted accuracy specifications of GPS system manufacturers.
 Future Uses and Training
Caltrans official Fundus said, "We look forward to using the Geodetic Surveyor(TM) as a research tool, for topographic work, photogrammetric flights as well as control surveys." Trimble will spend 80 days training crews around the state.
 Other Trimble Survey Contracts
Many Departments of Transportation are utilizing Trimble's survey equipment. According to Trimble Regional Sales Directors, new contracts for the Geodetic Surveyor(TM) include the Washington State Department of Transportation. Eleven other DOTs with Trimble survey equipment are Montana, Colorado, Texas, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota and New Hampshire.
