TRIBUNE SUPERSTATION WGN-TV TO AFFILIATE WITH WB NETWORK
CHICAGO, Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- WGN-TV will become the Chicago affiliate of the new WB Network, Dennis J. FitzSimons, Tribune Television president, confirmed here today.
"Utilizing WGN and WGN's extended cable coverage gives WB the best of both worlds -- the strongest possible over-the-air affiliate in Chicago plus a strong boost in national coverage and delivery," FitzSimons said. The affiliation will not change the local character of WGN nor will it change the station's sports commitments. WGN broadcasts Cubs and White Sox professional baseball, Bulls basketball and college events.
United Video Inc. of Tulsa, Okla., delivers WGN's signal to cable systems by satellite and will provide another feed of programming to cable viewers in markets where there is a WB affiliate. The alternate feed will permit WB affiliates to air network programming exclusively in their markets in accordance with Federal Communications Commission rules.
Adding WGN to the network lineup gives WB 73 percent national coverage, reaching 210 of 211 ADI markets. Tribune Television's six other stations also are WB affiliates.
"The WGN superstation allows WB the flexibility of building a dedicated, in-pattern distribution system without compromising our affiliates or our plan, and assures us of network coverage that can't be duplicated or surpassed by anyone outside the four networks," Jamie Kellner, WB chief executive, said. "WB is now positioned to being on time and in pattern, day and date in all markets."
Fred Dressler, Time Warner Cable senior vice president/programming, said, "The high quality programs that will be on WB not only make WGN even more desirable to subscribers, but also are an important incentive to cable operators to add WGN to their systems -- which we intend to do."
