TRIBUNE BROADCASTING JOINS FOUR BROADCAST, CABLE COMPANIES TO CREATE TELEVISION FOOD NETWORK

CHICAGO, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Tribune Broadcasting Company has agreed to become a general partner along with other broadcasting and cable companies to create Television Food Network (TVFN), a basic-cable channel of cooking, nutrition, fitness, and other food-related features and news that will premiere nationwide on Aug. 30 and launch full 24-hour service on Nov. 23, James C. Dowdle, president and CEO, announced here today.
Tribune will join Continental Cable Vision Inc., Landmark Communications Inc., Colony Communications (the cable division of the Providence Journal Company) and Scripps Howard Cable Company in the agreement. Other partners are Adelphia Communications Corp., CableVision Industries Inc., C-Tec Cable Systems and Times Mirror Cable TV.
The management company for TVFN is a joint venture of the Providence Journal Company and Reese Schonfeld's Pacesetter Communications.
 Financial details were not disclosed.
"We are excited to join with some of the country's premier cable companies to create this unique venture to produce television programming," Dowdle said.
The launch is planned with cable systems serving more than 5 million households combined, making it one of the largest initial audiences for a new cable network. Network programming will be produced in New York City-based studios under the management of Schonfeld, founding CEO of CNN and a veteran TV programming executive.
Plans are for Television Food Network to begin operation with an initial eight hours of original programming a day repeated three times in a 24-hour cycle. Later, daily production of original programming will expand to 12 hours. Network representatives will sell advertising for the channel.
Programming will include a celebrity interview show hosted by Robin Leach and the series "Cooking Classics," featuring such chefs as the legendary Dione Lucas and France's popular Jacques Pepin. Additional programming will include call-in shows about food, family and lifestyle; an hour of food news and views with chefs, gourmets and industry leaders; food preparation and presentation by renowned cooks; and features on how to shop smarter and better, how to improvise in the kitchen, a look at restaurants, and food-related travel.
Regular series are expected to include "How to Feed Your Family on $75 a Week" and "Food in a Flash," as well as interviews with authors and food editors.
A sneak preview will be available to cable systems across the country in the form of a two-hour, satellite-delivered coming attraction, which will appear on cable systems beginning Monday, Aug. 30. Programming will be expanded to a repeated four-hour block on Sept. 27, with full service to be launched Nov. 23.
Tribune Broadcasting television stations include WGN-TV in Chicago, WPIX-TV in New York, KTLA-TV in Los Angeles, WPHL-TV in Philadelphia, KWGN-TV in Denver, WGNX-TV in Atlanta and WGNO-TV in New Orleans, as well as ChicagoLand Cable Television, a 24-hour news cable channel in Chicago.
Tribune is a leading information and entertainment company. It also publishes six daily newspapers, operates six radio stations, produces and syndicates information and programming, and has an interest in newsprint manufacturing.
