The judges recognized the December December: see month.  1999 issue, the theme of which was "Serving Older Clients," for excellence in editorial content and graphic design for a magazine or journal. Articles discussed topics such as nursing home fraud and abuse, grandparent visitation Grandparent visitation. In some jurisdictions grandparents may have a legal right to have court ordered visitation (or access) of their grandchildren. In the United States all 50 states have a "grandparent visitation" statute that allows grandparents to ask a court to grant them , and age discrimination. Associate Editor Julie Brienza was the theme editor for the issue.

Senior Editor Jean Hellwege won an award for outstanding news writing for her March 2000 News & Trends lead story, "Law Enforcement, Legislators Grapple with Child Sexual Exploitation on the Net."

The judges also recognized Jerry Lawson Jerry Lawson (Jerome E. Lawson) born January 23, 1944 in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. Lawson was raised in Apopka, Florida. Lawson was the lead singer, arranger & producer of the a cappella group The Persuasions for 40 years. , an attorney from Burke, Virginia Burke is a census-designated place and an unincorporated community in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. As of the 2000 census, Burke had a total population of 57,737. , for outstanding feature writing for his March 2000 article "Lawfirm.com," which detailed how to set up a well-planned Web site.

Nearly 4,900 entries were received for consideration in a variety of categories in the competition. The contest is sponsored by Communication Concepts, publisher of Writing That Works, a newsletter for professional communicators.
