 its tree.

That's because the tree - composed of hundreds of cans of food - has done its job, said Willa Dobbs, director of Care and Share.

For the past week the 20-foot-tall tree has stood in the 3000 block of Cochran Street as a reminder to passers-by that some Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  residents need their help during the holiday season.

Because of the tree, Care and Share has raised $2,500 to buy about 130 cases of food to distribute to its 500 families a month, Dobbs said.

The tree, a green wood structure, held large cans of tomatoes, beans, corn and soups. Spots on the tree were left bare to encourage people to fill the barren shelves, said Alex Gandel of Troop Real Estate.

``Something as simple as this tree makes people do things they otherwise wouldn't do,'' Gandel said. ``Everybody gets a little something out of it.''

The tree was sponsored by the Simi Valley-Moorpark Association of Realtors. The Knights of Columbus Knights of Columbus, American Roman Catholic society for men, founded (1882) at New Haven, Conn. (where its headquarters are still located), by Father Michael J. McGivney.  spent about an hour dismantling the structure on Sunday.

The tree has seen better days, Gandel said. The association is seeking people to donate wood and building materials Building materials used in the construction industry to create .

to build a new tree for next year, he said.

Dobbs said she is a little short on gift certificates for meat for the holidays, but that she expects to cover all the people in need.

``I've never not had enough,'' she said.
