TREASURER'S RACE A CONTEST THIS YEAR LAWYER RUNNING AGAINST INCUMBENT.

GLENDALE - The city treasurer position will have its first real race in 20 years on April 5, when incumbent Ronald Borucki is challenged by attorney Phillip Kazanjian.

In his capacity as treasurer for the past six years, Borucki has been the city's investment officer, managing a $550 million portfolio, as well as the city's banker, responsible for the receipt and disbursement of all city funds.

``You cannot overestimate the importance of the city treasurer position,'' said city spokesman Ritch Wells. ``I think it's important for the voters to understand the importance of this position.''

The following are brief profiles of the candidates and what they would like to do as city treasurer:

Government spending policies that influence macroeconomic conditions. These policies affect tax rates, interest rates, and government spending, in an effort to control the economy.

Since the 1980s, most Western Countries have held a "tight" policy, limiting public expenditure.

Phillip Kazanjian

Education: University of Southern California; Lincoln University Lincoln University.
