 TRAVTEK TO SHOWCASE FUTURE OF AUTO TRAVEL
 TravTek, the most comprehensive test of "smart cars" and "smart


highways" in the United States, begins a one-year test in Orlando next week. Media can preview the system at an Orlando, Fla. news conference on Tuesday, March 24 at 10 a.m. at the Expo Center at Centroplex, 500 W. Livingston St., across from the Orlando Arena.  WHO: TravTek sponsors introducing the project include U.S.
 Secretary of Transportation Andrew H. Card Jr.; Orlando
 Mayor Bill Frederick; Florida Secretary of
 Transportation Ben G. Watts; American Automobile
 Association President Paul R. Verkuil; and General
 Motors Research and Environmental Staff Vice President
 Robert A. Frosch.
 WHAT: Approximately 5,500 volunteer drivers will test 100
 specially equipped Oldsmobile Toronados.
 WHERE: TravTek will be tested in the 1,200-square-mile Orlando
 metropolitan area, which includes 10,000 miles of roads
 in five counties.
 WHEN: The project begins March 25 and will last for one year.
 WHY: TravTek -- short for Travel Technology -- will test the
 contributions advanced computers and electronics can
 make towards a comprehensive traffic management program.
 The Orlando project is the most ambitious of its kind
 ever undertaken in this country.
