TRAVTEK PROJECT RECEIVES ITE TRANSPORTATION ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
WASHINGTON, Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The TravTek project partners -- General Motors, the American Automobile Association (AAA), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Florida Department of Transportation and the City of Orlando -- received the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Transportation Achievement Award at its 62nd annual meeting here today.
ITE's International President Alan Gonseth said in presenting the award, "The cooperation of public and private sector organizations in developing and carrying out this operational test is truly an outstanding transportation achievement.
"TravTek -- travel technology -- will go a long way toward answering questions on user acceptance and technical performance of these systems," Gonseth said.
TravTek is a one-year test of the nation's most advanced intelligent vehicle/highway system. The test involves 100 specially-equipped 1992 Oldsmobile Toronados. It includes navigation and route selection assistance, real-time traffic information and services-related data. Nearly 1,000 people have rented TravTek vehicles since its March 1992 launch.
"I'm pleased to accept the Transportation Achievement Award on behalf of the TravTek partners, each of whom has provided expertise to the project and shares General Motors' commitment to improving the driving experience and making it safer," said GM's James Rillings, TravTek's project manager.
The Transportation Achievement Award was initiated in 1984 to recognize significant and outstanding transportation achievements by transportation-related organizations. Past recipients include the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District and the Downtown Seattle Transportation Project.
