She had visited the Moving Wall Vietnam Memorial when it came to Victorville and Palmdale, and now she was scanning it again for her son - killed in battle in Long An on July 3, 1969, a 20-year-old private first class who had been in the Army five months and in Vietnam six weeks.

She found him finally on panel 21W, line 51 - between the names of Marine Cpl. John Fordham John Fordham was Bishop of Durham and Bishop of Ely.

Lancaster veteran George Palermo said he first visited the Moving Wall in 1990 after driving by and seeing it on the lawn of the federal building in Redondo Beach Redondo Beach (rĭdŏn`dō), city (1990 pop. 60,167), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1892. He has visited it repeatedly all around Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  since then, and saw the real wall in Washington, D.C., once.

``I felt myself being drawn into that wall,'' Palermo said of his first visit. ``I felt I fitted better within that wall, with those names, than I did with the life in which I had existed since I left Vietnam.''

Palermo is a member of a Christian Vietnam veterans organization called Point Man International. The organization stations volunteers at the wall's appearances, concentrating on nighttime - when many veterans come to visit unbothered by crowds.

``They come at night and they can be quiet and alone with their friends,'' Palermo said. ``These guys will bring a bottle of beer to their friends and sit down and share it with them.''

The wall provides a different experience than a typical Memorial Day or Veterans Day ceremony, Palermo said, ``because of those names. I know for me and other veterans, they don't walk up and see a list of names. They walk up and see their friends.''

More than 250 feet long and at its highest five feet tall - half that of the Washington wall - the Moving Wall bears 58,226 names - six more than when it came to Palmdale in 1999.

An information center lets visitors look up names to find where they are listed on the panels - which begin with the first U.S. combat death in 1959 and end with 18 men killed on a mission to recapture recapture n. in income tax, the requirement that the taxpayer pay the amount of tax savings from past years due to accelerated depreciation or deferred capital gains upon sale of property. There are now three traveling walls.

The wall is set up at the northern end of the park, which is on 10th Street West at Avenue K-8.

Veterans are invited to talk about their experiences at informal gatherings called ``Vet Talks'' at 9 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the adjoining ball field. The talks are hosted by Point Man.
