TRAVELERS ADVISED TO LEAVE EARLY : THANKSGIVING WEEKEND USUALLY YEAR'S BUSIEST.

Thousands of people no doubt will begin their Thanksgiving holiday weekend today by hitting the road and taking to the skies, in what is typically the most heavily traveled period of the year.

And travel experts warn: Leave early.

Airport officials and the automobile club offer these tips for safe, stress-free travel during the holiday:

Arrive at the airport two hours early for domestic flights and three hours early for international flights.

Travel light in order to avoid delays. Airports are on heightened security and all luggage is subject to searches.

Call airlines to confirm time of flight and gate.

Do not leave cars unattended at airport curbs. Cars will be towed.

LAX provides free shuttle service from its parking lots at 111th Street and on 96th Street.

Due to heavy traffic during the Thanksgiving holiday, Burbank Airport has lowered its valet parking fee from $17 to $13.

Amtrak officials suggest traveling custom class for an additional $7 because that guarantees a seat. They also encourage travelers to arrive 45 minutes before boarding time.

When traveling by car to another county give yourself an extra hour.

All children younger than 12 should ride in the back seat of the car.

Take food and rest breaks every two hours when on the road.
