Mardi Gras L.A. style

No need to travel to New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras style. You'll find colorful Brazilian dancing and singing, a parade and costume contests during Los Angeles' Mardi Gras from noon to 10 p.m. Tuesday at El Pueblo Historic Monument on Olvera Street in Los Angeles. Prizes will be awarded to the best costumed couple, man, woman, boy and girl, as well as for the best mask and funniest hat. A traditional highlight of the Mardi Gras will be the burning of the Mal Humor, a pinata representing the cares of those present. When it burns, legend has it, all the troubles of those in attendance go up in smoke. The event is free. Information: (213) 625-5045.

Man with a mission

You can visit one of California's missions and take in an exhibit of memorabilia related to Abraham Lincoln from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 15-22 at Mission San Juan Capistrano

Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded on All Saints Day November 1, 1776 by Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order.
. The mission is celebrating the anniversary of the signing of documents by Lincoln in 1865 that deeded the mission back to the Catholic church. The actual documents and other Lincoln items will be on display throughout the week. Throughout the day on Feb. 15, a Lincoln impersonator also will be on hand.
