TRANZONIC REPORTS FISCAL 92 EARNINGS UP 6 PERCENT
CLEVELAND, April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Tranzonic Companies (AMEX: TNZ) today reported net income of $4,576,300, or $1.29 per share, for the fiscal year ended February 29, an increase of six percent over the $4,318,700, or $1.23 per share, earned a year earlier. Sales were $110,717,600 versus $107,333,500 last year.
The Cleveland-based manufacturer/distributor of paper, cloth and vinyl products said that fiscal 1992 operating income rose to a record $7,193,000, up seven percent from the $6,714,900 of a year earlier. The gain was largely attributable to effective cost containment which produced an operating margin of 6.5 percent in fiscal 1992 compared to 6.3 percent last year.
Tranzonic said that efficiencies in its two largest operating divisions, the Personal Care Division and the Industrial Textiles Division, contributed most to the improvement in margins.
Robert S. Reitman, chairman and chief executive officer, said that the year's modest sales growth reflected current economic conditions. He said the Personal Care Division, the company's largest operating unit, recorded relatively good sales gains, but that sales of the company's two industry-oriented divisions continued to be affected adversely by the recession.
He added that the Housewares Division was impacted by the deteriorating retail climate, particularly in the year's final quarter.
Noting that the fourth quarter acquisition of Pressing Supply Company had only a nominal effect on the year's results, Reitman said that the company expected the manufacturer of ironing board pads and covers to bolster the Housewares Division's operations in the new fiscal year. He said that the Personal Care Division's planned introduction of two new product lines during the current year also has positive implications.
Net income for the fourth quarter was $734,500, or 21 cents per share, down from $972,400, or 28 cents per share, a year earlier. Fiscal 1992 fourth quarter sales were $28,216,400 compared to $26,262,300 a year earlier.
Tranzonic has four divisions. The Personal Care Division manufactures and distributes a full line of feminine hygiene products, children's disposable diapers, adult incontinent briefs and toilet seat covers. The Industrial Textiles Division supplies industrial wiping products and the Industrial Packaging Division produces spiral- wound paper tubes and cores for industrial purposes. The Housewares Division designs, produces and markets laundry accessories, closet organization products, personal travel organizers and cedar storage units.
