TRANSTECHNOLOGY EXPANDS ELECTRONIC CONNECTOR BUSINESS WITH COMMONWEALTH OF INDEPENDENT STATES AGREEMENT

UNION, N.J., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ --- TransTechnology Corporation (NYSE: TT) announced today that it had, through a newly formed subsidiary, entered into exclusive distribution agreements with six manufacturers of electronic connectors and components located in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Under the terms of the agreements, the wholly owned subsidiary of TransTechnology has the exclusive right to distribute, throughout the western and selected eastern markets, all electronic and electrical connector products manufactured and/or designed by the CIS companies, believed to be amongst the leading electrical connector manufacturers in the former Soviet Union. The CIS companies involved are Iset, in Kamensk-Juralsky; Atlant in Izobilny; Koskad In Cherkesk; Ala-Too in Bichkek; Konnektor in Kharkov; and Electrodetal in Karachev.
Announced in conjunction with the ECETEX '93 East/Central Europe trade show held in New York this week, the agreement is the result of almost a year's analysis and review of the CIS manufacturers' capabilities and how they can be matched to existing and forecast worldwide markets. James Stempson, president of the TransTechnology Electronics Division and its newly formed subsidiary, Electronic Connections and Assemblies, Inc., said, "We have been working with the CIS factories for over a year now, and have found their quality and engineering excellent. Their ability to meet deadlines has been particularly pleasing. Several of the components of connectors currently produced by our TransTechnology Electronics Division are of CIS origin and are used in the U.S. market after significant testing and evaluation by very discriminating customers."
Michael J. Berthelot, chairman and chief executive officer of TransTechnology, said, "This agreement allows us to go forward with our plan to grow the company through a broad range of products which can be moved through our existing marketing channels with minimal increases in operating overhead. Our Electronics Division will now have access to major engineering, tool and die, and manufacturing capabilities matched by few of our competitors. The competitive cost structure and advanced skill and technology levels of the CIS manufacturers should enable us to offer high quality products at very competitive prices and to undertake significant development projects for our customers. We expect to capture significant business in high volume parts which are currently produced in the Far East. We are very proud that TransTechnology has been selected by these fine companies as their exclusive distributor to aid them in their conversion to a free market system of worldwide trade. We believe that this expansion of our electronic connection business can become, over the next few years, a major portion of the company's overall business."
Electronic Connections and Assemblies, Inc. (ECA) will be headquartered in Peoria, Ill., as part of the TransTechnology Electronics Division. It will provide engineering and product development services to assist its customers in the design of new high volume electrical connectors and assemblies. Its initial thrust will be to provide products to the computer and telecommunications industries as well as specific industrial product niches. ECA's strength, apart from an anticipated price advantage, will be its ability to have engineering designs and complex tooling, molds and dies prepared with short lead times.
TransTechnology is a diversified manufacturer of industrial and aerospace products employing over 1,150 people in its eight facilities in the United States and those in the U.K., Australia, and Belgium.
