TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY CARD ANNOUNCES MAJOR PACIFIC RIM CONFERENCE
SEATTLE, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Secretary of Transportation Andrew H. Card Jr., addressing the National Technology Initiative Conference (NTI) at the University of Washington, today announced that Seattle will be the site of a major international Transportation Technology Conference in the summer of 1993.
The Pacific Rim TransTech Conference will be jointly sponsored by the department's Federal Highway Administration and the Washington State Department of Transportation. Business, government and academic leaders from Pacific Rim countries (those that border the Pacific Ocean) as well as Europe and other nations, are expected to participate in the three-day session set for July 25-28, 1993.
"This gathering of top international leaders from the transportation industry is precisely the kind of follow-on activity we want to see," Card said.
"As you all know," he added, "the National Technology Initiative was organized by President Bush to foster just such innovative partnerships to make certain that America continues to play a key role in technology advancement and economic development.
"It is absolutely vital that as a nation we are prepared to meet the challenges of global competition and opportunity. Events such as the international Pacific Rim Conference will assure that we meet that goal."
Organizers of the Pacific Rim TransTech Conference are expecting up to 1,500 participants. They plan to offer an unusual combination of advanced and successful surface transportation programs.
The conference will be highlighted by five specific program topics. These are:
-- Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS), focusing on "smart cars" and "smart" highways.
-- Propulsion Technology, featuring "state-of-the-art" information on alternate fuels.
-- Management Systems, showing the latest developments in management support systems for transportation applications.
-- Intermodal Ties, bringing different types of surface transportation systems together for movement of goods and people.
-- Strategic Highway Research Programs (SHRP), presenting the results of a five-year, $150 million research program.
These programs are similar to the topics covered at the NTI Conference here. The NTI program was launched earlier this year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This is the third in a series of sessions being held nationwide. The primary focus of the NTI effort is to bring government research and technology resources together with private enterprise to explore creative partnerships in economic development.
