TRANSMEDEX WEB HOLTER PROVIDES 3-D VIEW OF HEART.

TransMedEx, Melville, N.Y., a provider of telemedicine monitoring and diagnostic services, is now offering a Web-enabled Holter Monitoring system, the only such device that can generate 12-leads of EKG data from a 3-channel recording using only five electrodes.

The enhanced Holter provides diagnostic data of comparable quality to a standard 12-lead EKG, which requires 10 electrodes. The reduced number of patches of the Web Holter insures patient comfort and mobility. Test data is available to physicians via a secured Internet site using a standard browser, saving both patients and physicians valuable time.

A 12-lead view of the heart is the industry standard for assessing the electrical conduction system of the heart, enabling physicians to identify the exact location of weakened heart muscles, as well as providing more comprehensive data on arrhythmias and ischemia. The 12-lead technology also provides additional diagnostic data on transient anginal episodes, as well as the detection of silent ischemia. Data quality is enhanced by the monitor's reduced artifact, or extraneous "noise," as the five electrodes are secured to bony points on the patient's torso.

A traditional, single-channel Holter monitor records each heartbeat during a 24-hour period. The pager-sized, light-weight Web Holter provides full cardiographs from its five electrodes, and can run up to 48 hours on a single AA battery. By getting comprehensive test data as the patient goes about his daily routine, doctors are able to get an even more realistic profile of the heart than provided by the standard EKG, which uses the same 3-channel, 12-lead technology but requires the patient to be tied to a stationary monitor.
