Under a proposal submitted to the NCAA NCAA abbr. National Collegiate Athletic Association by the Pacific-10 Conference The Pacific-10 Conference (Pac-10) is a college athletic conference which operates in the western United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division I. Membership Full members , it could happen. The conference wants to eliminate the rule requiring transfers to sit out one season before becoming eligible, allowing athletes to move from school-to-school without penalty. It might sound a little farfetched, but it already happens in sports such as track and field, baseball and tennis. The Pac-10's proposal would apply to football, basketball and ice hockey ice hockey: see hockey, ice. ice hockey Game played on an ice rink by two teams of six players on skates. The object is to drive a puck (a small, hard rubber disk) into the opponents' goal with a hockey stick, thus scoring one point. . ``Our rationale was we thought all student-athletes should have the opportunity to transfer,'' Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen said. ``We thought philosophically it was wrong to not apply to all sports. We thought it should be explored.'' The NCAA's management council will consider the proposal in January. A formal vote by the entire NCAA membership could occur in April. Hansen doesn't favor the idea of athletes becoming free agents, and he said baseball coaches already complain about their players getting recruited during summer leagues by players from other colleges, who know redshirting is not required to transfer. ``If the major, major institutions tried to recruit, the rule would be reversed,'' Hansen said. On the surface, it appears the rule would create some sweating on the part of smaller schools. Let's say their quarterback has a banner season, then decides he wants to play for Miami or Washington. What's to stop him? Then again, it would allow a bench warmer Noun 1. bench warmer - (sports) a substitute who seldom plays athletics, sport - an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition second-stringer, substitute, reserve - an athlete who plays only when a starter on the team is replaced at USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. or UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX to transfer to Ball State and start without sitting out a season. Either way, it could have a major impact if passed by the NCAA. --Peterson stat: How physical is Oklahoma freshman tailback Adrian Peterson Adrian Peterson may refer to:
--Notre Dame watch: It's always fun to see how the bowls treat Notre Dame, which is its own entity. The Irish are considered part of the Big East for bowl considerations, although they play football as an independent. But nothing is ever as it seems with Notre Dame. The Cotton Bowl, which has no ties to the Big East, is eyeing the Irish, because of a ``Notre Dame clause'' in its contract with the Southeastern Conference. The bowl has a one-time exception to take Notre Dame instead of an SEC team, as long as the SEC agrees and is short of eligible bowl teams. --All or nothing: The Big 12 is in a bit of a bowl quandary. Iowa State and Nebraska face the possibility of either playing in the Fiesta Bowl or not playing in any bowl. Both teams are 5-4 and sit atop the conference's North Division. They must finish with a winning record to go to a bowl. A 6-6 record, assuming they lose to No. 2-ranked Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game, is not a winning record under NCAA rules. The NCAA allows a waiver if a team goes 6-6 and wins its conference championship, but there is nothing set up for ``division champions.'' The Big 12 will need to apply for a waiver for Iowa State or Nebraska if they finish 6-6. --Even up: If USC played Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, the game would be considered even by oddsmakers. --Falling fast: The debacle of Penn State's season just reached a new depth, when the Nittany Lions' senior class realized it is the first under coach Joe Paterno not to win a bowl game. ``If someone would have told me that five years ago, I definitely wouldn't have believed them,'' linebacker Derek Wake said. ``Coming here out of high school, you expect to be in a bowl game every year.'' ``We came in with a lot of expectations,'' quarterback Zack Mills added. ``It's frustrating that it didn't work out. It's one of those classes that people will look back and say, 'What happened?'''
