TRANSARC TO OFFER ENCINA AND DCE FOR SOLARIS 2.0

TRANSARC TO OFFER ENCINA AND DCE FOR SOLARIS 2.0
PITTSBURGH, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Transarc Corporation today

announced it will adopt SunSoft's Solaris 2.0 environment as a reference platform for Encina(TM), Transarc's family of products for open online transaction Processing (OLTP).
In addition, since Encina is based on the Open Software Foundation's (OSF) Distributed Computing Environment (DCE), Transarc also announced it will provide a production-quality implementation of DCE for Solaris 2.0.
Transarc has been shipping early availability versions of Encina and DCE for SunSoft Solaris 1.0 and IBM AIX 3.2 since March 1992. "Transarc's strategy is to enable a comprehensive Encina/DCE solution on all leading industry platforms," said Derek Brink, strategic marketing executive for Transarc. "The availability of Encina and DCE on Solaris 2.0, the key software platform for Sun and many other Solaris licensees, is important to a large number of end-user organizations."
Transarc's announcement is linked with SunSoft's announcement of a major extension of Solaris 2.0's distributed computing architecture called Solaris Federated Services. The fundamental idea behind Federated Services is to make it easy to integrate support for multiple distributed services into the Solaris 2.0 environment. These may come from SunSoft, e.g. ONC; from other Sun Microsystems Inc. businesses, e.g. OSI from SunConnect and NetWare(R) SunLink(R) from SunSelect; or from third parties, as in this case with DCE from Transarc.
"The ability to integrate multiple distributed services such as the DCE and NetWare offerings further demonstrates the strength of Solaris 2.0 and its ability to meet the evolving requirements of distributed computing," said Bill Coleman, vice president system software for SunSoft. "The Federated Services architecture, combined with products such as Transarc's Encina and the DCE, will allow Solaris customers to easily integrate heterogeneous systems, an absolute necessity in today's computing environments. SunSoft is pleased that Transarc is making their products available for Solaris, for the benefit of those customers who require these solutions."
"SunSoft's Federated Services architecture, when coupled with products such as Encina and DCE, will give Sun's end-user customers the flexibility to choose the technologies and services that best meet their needs," said Alfred Z. Spector, president and CEO of Transarc Corporation. "The Federated Services interfaces should ultimately provide end-users with an even wider variety of solutions for their Solaris environments."
Availability of Encina and DCE for Solaris will be in two phases. Transarc will continue to ship early availability versions of Encina and DCE on Solaris 1.0 to Sun customers throughout 1992. Production- quality implementations of Encina and DCE for Solaris 2.0 will be available in 1993. Details will be announced at a future date.
Encina, with its standards-based approach to OLTP and its endorsement by major hardware and software vendors, will be a widely- used platform for commercial-grade open OLTP. The Encina products -- which include a Toolkit, Monitor, Structured File Server, and Peer-to- Peer Communication Services -- provide a modular, multi-layered OLTP solution for computing enterprises that span multiple locations, utilize computers from many vendors, and require access to data stored in a variety of databases. Encina products, which have been licensed and endorsed by system vendors such as IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Stratus and NEC, support the X/Open XA interface for interoperation with relational database management systems such as Informix, Ingres, Oracle and Sybase.
"The DCE product for Solaris 2.0 is yet another example of Transarc's leadership in distributed computing technology, and its commitment to the success of the DCE," added Spector. As a technology supplier to the OSF, Transarc provides the key data management components of the DCE: The Distributed File Service (DCE-DFS), and the Local File System (DCE-LFS), a log-based physical file system. Other standard DCE components include Remote Procedure Call (RPC), Threads, Cell Directory Service (CDS), Security, Distributed Time Service (DTS), and Global Directory Service (GDS).
Transarc Corporation is a developer of open, distributed systems software, with headquarters in Pittsburgh. The company's products focus on two main areas of distributed computing -- file systems and transaction processing. Transarc's first major file systems product, AFS(R) 3, is licensed and supported at more than 200 sites in 15 countries worldwide. Early customers of Transarc's Encina products include Charles Schwab and Citibank. Transarc, with over 100 employees, continues to invest in the development of innovative software products for distributed computing.
