TRANS WORLD AIRLINES, INC. TO RETURN GATES TO COLUMBUS AIRPORT AUTHORITY

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Negotiations over the past few months between Trans World Airlines, Inc., and the Columbus Airport Authority for the return of TWA's excess gate capacity has been resolved under the terms of the agreement recently settled by the Authority's staff and legal counsel, it was announced today by the Authority.
The agreement will entail the return of gates 1, 7 and 9 and associated space, leaving the carrier with facilities sufficient to accommodate its existing operations and future growth as it completes its reorganization under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy law.
"We are indeed encouraged by the outcome of the agreement, which will provide TWA with a more appropriately sized operational area as we emerge from bankruptcy," Richard Hickman, Columbus station manager of Trans World Airlines, Inc., said. TWA currently operates five daily non-stop departures to their St. Louis hub, additionally servicing two convenient daily non-stop departures to New York's JFK airport with a livery featuring 727, DC9 and MD80 aircraft from Columbus.
"TWA has been a stalwart performer in the Columbus marketplace," remarked Melvin L. Schottenstein, chairman of the Columbus Authority Board. "We're delighted with the opportunity to work out a successful exchange that will ultimately create a healthy balance for TWA's daily operations along with the benefit of providing capacity to our existing family of carriers and prospective carriers seeking long term growth in our community."
Trans World Airlines, Inc., completed the 1992 season holding 7 percent of the local market share while reporting a total of 305,061 passengers that originated and terminated at Port Columbus International Airport.
