TRAIN-CAR FATAL STILL SUICIDE, SAY COPS INJURED PARTNER REBUTS DEATH TRY.

Byline: RICK COCA

Staff Writer

Four days after a man drove his car into the path of a Metrolink train in Sun Valley, killing himself and injuring his girlfriend, police are now saying the woman doesn't remember what happened, but are still calling it an attempted murder-suicide.

Based on eyewitness accounts and a recorded statement from the woman, Michelle Wright Michelle Wright (born July 1 1961 in Morpeth, Ontario) is a Canadian country music singer. She is one of the country's most widely recognised and awarded female country singers of the '90s, winning the Canadian Country Music Awards (CCMA) Fans' Choice Entertainer Of The Year Award , detectives believe Brandon Funches deliberately drove onto the tracks Monday and parked his car.

In the statement, taken Tuesday from Wright's hospital bed, where she is recovering from a concussion and other injuries, she told detectives the couple was arguing before the crash, Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police Lt. Earlier this week, Rock said Wright told police that Funches tried to kill her and himself. But now, Rock is backing off that statement, saying she told police she has little recollection of what occurred in the moments before or during the crash.

"She doesn't remember how she got on the tracks or if Funches made any statement at the end or if he made an effort to get out (of the car) or not," Rock said.

"The eyewitnesses saw him drive around the stopped cars and the down (crossing) arm and stop on the tracks. ... We have what appears to be, from the action of the driver, that it was an intentional act, and that's how we're classifying it."

In a phone interview from her hospital bed, an emotional Wright, 23, of Los Angeles denied early reports that she told police Funches intentionally killed himself or tried to kill her.

"They're saying that I said my boyfriend tried to kill me," she said. "He didn't try to kill me."

"Before we went to get the car part, we were kissing," Wright said, adding tearfully that Funches told her last week he wanted to marry her soon.

"He told me he was buying the ring," she said. "He was a nice, beautiful person."
