:A) today announced that it has validated the ChipWrights CWv16 DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  core in a system on a chip (SOC) manufactured in 90-nanometer (nm) process technology. This core was supplied to Agilent by ChipWrights, Inc., a Waltham, Mass., semiconductor company specializing in providing a new class of digital signal processing-based devices optimized for imaging related applications. This industry-first, high-performance chip confirms Agilent's ability to meet customers' time-to-market needs for next-generation ASIC and SOC applications in the desktop printer and imaging market.

"Our design teams are responsible for delivering sophisticated, cost-effective chips for high-volume products, and today's 90-nm validation in silicon of one of the industry's highest performing DSP cores is a key milestone in maintaining our leadership."

The SOC chip operates at 400 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. , has 134 input/output signals and uses two million logic gates. The SOC also includes a 2.5 V PLL PLL - phase-locked loop , DMA (1) (Digital Media Adapter) See digital media hub.

The ChipWrights CWv16 core at the heart of the Agilent SOC features a high-performance, highly scalable architecture comprising a RISC processor and a highly integrated, scalable array of DSP vector processing units. It supports 64 8-bit MACS/cycle and reaches application performance levels similar to the industry's fastest DSPs, but at significantly lower power points.

With the implementation of this SOC in silicon, Agilent extends its SOC and IP leadership into the 90-nm generation. Agilent was the first to integrate Intel(R) i960 and Motorola 68K microprocessor cores into commercial and consumer SOCs and continues to integrate the industry's leading processing cores. Also a leader in SerDes IP, Agilent builds upon its demonstrated success developing a modular SerDes design to offer 90-nm SerDes cores that operate at up to 12.5 Gb/s and support a range of standards such as 8X Fibre Channel, PCI Express, and SAS/SATA.
