:A) today announced a series of ultra-miniature, high-resolution, three-channel optical incremental encoder modules. These modules are designed to meet the requirements of manufacturers of general-purpose housed encoders and integrated motor-encoder assemblies, and for incorporation in applications ranging from pick-and-place machines to automotive systems See ITS, embedded system, drive-by-wire, adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance system, autonomous vehicle, heads-up display, DSRC, lane departure system, CAN bus, FlexRay and SYNC. .

The Agilent AEDA-3200 series encoders measure only 17 mm in diameter by 24 mm high and offer customers a "one-size-fits-all-resolutions" solution. Using the Agilent encoder, the customer needs to produce only one design for all resolutions. Until now, different resolutions had required different encoder sizes or mounting arrangements.

"Many motor manufacturers, machine manufacturers and system integrators have told us they would prefer a modular encoder that fits within their own integrated housing," said Chong Khin Mien, vice president and general manager of Agilent's Motion Control Products Division. "The AEDA-3200 series of plug-and-play modules meets this demand with a combination of performance, flexibility and low cost far superior to competitive solutions."

Agilent's AEDA-3200-T (for top-down mounting) series of incremental encoders features resolutions from 2,500 to 20,000 cpr (counts per revolution) and an integrated RS422 differential line (hardware) differential line - A kind of electrical connection using two wires, one of which carries the normal signal (V) and the other carries an inverted version the signal (-V).  driver permitting signal lines up to 1,200 meters. The devices feature operation from -40 through +125 deg C. The use of Agilent's plug-and-play tool eliminates inaccuracies from normal installation misalignment mis·a·ligned

without the need for expensive assembly fixtures. Agilent also intends to offer AEDA-3200-B bottom-up mount versions with heights of only 12 mm by mid-2005.

The AEDA-3200 series uses transmissive encoder technology to sense rotary position. The sensor consists of an LED light source, photodetector A device that senses light. It uses the principle of photoconductivity, which is exhibited in certain materials that change their electrical conductivity when exposed to light. U.S. Pricing and Availability

The Agilent AEDA-3200-TBK (7,500 cpr) incremental encoder is the first member of the series to be available through Agilent's direct sales channel and worldwide distribution partners. It is priced at $43 each in 5,000-unit quantities and is available now.

The other encoders in the AEDA-3200-T and AEDA-B series, with resolutions from 2,500 to 20,000 cpr, are expected to be available between the fourth quarter of 2004 and the first quarter of 2005. Pricing is expected to be in the range of $35 each in 5,000-unit quantities at 5,000 cpr resolution.
