At the meeting, Executive Director Howard Brooks reviewed some current Board of Trade activities. The Base Retention and Aerospace Committee has been discussing ways to increase the number of engineer candidates available for local industry jobs. Three base retention grants also have been received by local organizations to use in campaigning for keeping High Desert bases. They are: Ridgecrest for the Naval Weapons Center at China Lake, Lancaster; the Board of Trade for Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway. ; and Barstow for the Marine Logistics Center. Brooks said the Board of Trade assisted the Kern Air Pollution Control District in its efforts to remove eastern Kern County from the proposed upgrade in air quality restrictions in the San Joaquin Valley Noun 1.
