TRACK NOTEBOOK: THIS SPRINTER HAS LOFTY GOALS STATE MEET NEXT FOR LEOPOLD.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

Danny Leopold doesn't seem like a guy just happy to be there, even though he is the first Highland athlete to make the state meet in four years.

Leopold was actually disappointed with running a personal record 37.73 to finish fourth in the 300 hurdles at Masters and advance to the state prelims Friday.

``I had larger aspirations aspirations nplaspiraciones fpl (= ambition); ambición f

aspirations npl (= hopes, ambition) → aspirations fpl
,'' Leopold said. ``I wanted to get sub 37.5.''

Despite not reaching that goal, Leopold has already set another for this weekend, to break into 36 seconds.

Leopold will benefit at the state meet from the 300 hurdles being a highly competitive event in the Southern Section. All nine runners at the Masters meet advanced to state by beating the state qualifying mark of 38.70.

``I started slow at Masters and a lot of people got a little too far ahead,'' Leopold said. ``I finished decent, but I need to start better.''

The Antelope Valley
seems stuck after long jumping 23 feet the past two weeks to barely qualifying for the state prelims.

Although he would like to beat the 23-8 1/2 of six weeks ago that is still sixth best in the state this year, just making the state meet is an accomplishment - and valuable experience - for a sophomore.

``I'm working hard in practice this week to get back to where I was,'' Crenshaw said. ``I've been working more on getting up high in the jump and my technique rather than the running. For me to get to the high 23s or maybe even 24 at the end of my sophomore year would be big for me.''

Crenshaw plans to take advantage of his first trip to Sacramento, bringing his mother and father along to see the state capitol Capitol, seat of the U.S. Congress

The Lancaster sprinter again suffered slow starts despite qualifying for the state prelims by finishing second at Masters in the 200 meters and fifth in the 100.

``I worked on it all week and it did no good,'' Love said. ``In my league, the start isn't that important because of my speed. But at this stage, everything has to be perfect. The start is what may break me.''
