TRACK NOTEBOOK: COACH: MOSLEY GAVE UP CHANCE.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

Shaquina Mosley, one of the few Antelope Valley-area athletes with the chance to advance to the state finals in track and field, had a chance to return to the team for the Golden League finals.

Mosley reportedly asked to leave early from practice a few weeks ago. But assistant coach Rob Hucke didn't know she had made the request. Mosley was leaving when Hucke called to her. According to Hucke, she turned and looked but continued walking.

Hucke went to the weight room after practice and found Mosley there waiting for her ride. Hucke said he questioned why it was so urgent to leave if she was still around, causing Mosley to blow up at him. Mosley was kicked off the team for her outburst.

Mosley, a standout on the basketball team, had started track seasons in the past but never finished. Her natural talent was immediately apparent, especially in the triple jump.

In fact, it was track and not basketball that got her noticed by the college she will attend in the fall. At a meet in Arizona, she impressed im·press 1

Mosley apologized to Hucke two weeks after the incident but did not ask to return to the team.

before the hurdles races Friday. Walker was undefeated and the league favorite, but he decided it wasn't worth risking further injury because of his football potential. Walker has a scholarship to Colorado State.

Walker showed up as the team was preparing to board the bus Friday, leaving coaches to think he would participate. But he said he already had decided not to run, and was there to support his teammates. In any event, Walker did not attend the meet as he got a phone call from his mother and notified coaches that she needed his assistance.

``I don't want to go to Colorado State with a bunch of minor injuries,'' Walker said. ``I want to go there healthy so I made the decision, which I thought was right, which was not to run.''
