TRACK BEAT: PALMDALE GIRLS TRACKING A TITLE; BRANDY SMITH LEADS JUNIOR PACK.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Daily News Staff Writer

Palmdale High, the Golden League's dominant track team, is going to stay that way, especially the girls.

Almost all the top athletes are non-seniors.

Junior Brandy brandy [for brandywine, from Du.,=burnt, i.e., distilled, wine], strong alcoholic spirit distilled from wine or from marc, the residue of the wine press. The most noted brandy is cognac, made from white grapes in the Charente district of France.  Smith is a multi-sport standout. , the reigning Golden League 100- and 200-meter sprint champion, blazed to a hand-timed 10.2 in the 100 versus Lancaster.

Teammate Jerrik Holmes, a sophomore, also has been impressive. He has a best of 48 flat in the 400 and he high jumps 6-6. Holmes is the brother of graduated Tranisha Holmes, now a top women's sprinter at Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. Shot-putter and discus thrower Matt Leonard, who won both events in the Golden League last year, has a good chance to repeat.

``Matt's looking pretty good,'' Wilson said.

Lancaster: The Eagles, competing at the varsity level for the first time, have a rising star in girls' distance runner Rosanna Kirkendall.

Kirkendall, a sophomore, swept the 800 (2:36), mile (6:13) and two-mile (13:26) in a dual-meet loss to Golden League rival Palmdale last week. Her personal bests are 2:27 in the 800, 5:41 in the mile, and 13:11 in two-mile. The two-mile mark was achieved last year as a freshman.

``She's a standout,'' coach Charles Thatch said. ``She's determined, eager, and has a good attitude.''

Any top Golden League distance runner must contend with Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill's Danielle Day, one of the top runners in the state. Kirkendall went head-to-head with Day in the 1,600 relay last weekend at the Herb Wire Relays at Antelope Valley College. She was ahead of Day, too, even though Lancaster did not maintain its lead through the next legs.

``I'm hoping to beat her,'' Kirkendall said.

The seniorless Eagles, whose boys placed second in the Herb Wire Relays, are shuffling sprinters but have a good core of distance runners. Junior Richard Buttler leads the pack.
