ARCADIA - More than 500 schools from 24states are represented in this year's Arcadia Invitational, but no boys' track and field teams can boast the depth that Royal High of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  does in the distance events.

The Highlanders, last year's meet champions in the 4-mile relay and 2005 Div. I state cross country titlists, showed why they are one of the top distance groups in the nation, racing to a school-record 17 minutes, 19 seconds Friday in the "Burnin' Batons" relays at Arcadia High.

Trailing by 15 yards in the second leg, junior Hudson Andrews closed the gap in his final gap, and Royal went on to win the relay by more than 50 yards.

"With 300 yards to go, I decided to give it my final burst," said Andrews, who has the area's top mark in the 800 (1:55) this season. "We've got a lot of talent, but we're not cocky cock·y

The Spartans fell behind by six yards during the second pass and could never close the gap, but anchor Michelle Poindexter said she was pleased with the result.

"We ran a good race," she said. "We came in expecting to place high, because we have experience. Our 4x200 team is the same as our 4x100 team. It's great to be able to run against teams we normally never get a chance to see."
