GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Cory Primm is back on top of the national yearly list in the 800 meters.

The Westlake High senior won the event in 1 minute, 48.63 seconds, regaining the fastest time in the nation this season, in the Nike Outdoor Nationals at North Carolina North Carolina, state in the SE United States. The two-time defending state champion had led the nation for much of the season at 1:49.50 until Dylan Ferris of North Carolina ran 1:49.27 last weekend to supplant Primm.

"It kind of helped to see someone in front of me on the list," Primm said. "I wanted to get it back."

Primm got the top spot back and then some in recording the state's best mark since 1997. His effort was also the fastest mark in area history and moved Primm into ninth on the all-time state performer list.

The race quickly turned into a duel between Ferris and Primm, with the pair running first and second after the opening 400.

Primm made a bold break to pass Ferris with 200 to go to turn the race into a time trial.

James Gilreath of Barlett, Tenn., was second in 1:49.98, and Ferris faded to third in 1:50.12.

"Painful," Primm said when asked to describe the race. "I felt myself distance him a little, but I wasn't sure if I was going to have it or he was going to have it."

It was Primm's second victory of the season over Ferris. Primm beat Ferris in the Arcadia Invitational on April 7 en route to running 1:49.50.

"I beat (Ferris) today, but my main goal was to come here and win," Primm said.

Saturday's meet was the first time McCullough has thrown against Henning, a senior who will attend North Carolina. McCullough has broken Henning's freshman and sophomore records and hopes to challenge Henning's junior and senior records over the next two seasons.

McCullough threw a best of 243-9 in the second round and appeared to have surpassed Henning's mark in the third round but was called for a foul after losing his balance and stepping out of the ring.

"That throw was close to being close or very near (to Henning), but he held it to the last round," McCullough said. "(Henning) has really got me going, and I've been training all year for to go after."
