At 5 feet 6, sophomore Josh Harrison from Rio Mesa High was considered short for a long jumper. After growing six inches in the past 12 months, he now is considered a star.

Although height is not as essential in track and field as it is in, say, basketball, Harrison has parlayed the growth spurt growth spurt Pediatrics A period of rapid growth in middle adolescence; ♀ ↑ ±8 cm/yr ±age 12; ♂ ↑ ±10 cm/yr ± age 14; GS is orderly, affecting acral parts–ie, hands and feet grow before proximal regions,  into top long jumping mark in the state this season, leaping 23 feet 5 inches Saturday at the Camarillo Classic Invitational at Camarillo High.

Harrison, a starting defensive back on the football team in the fall, is looking to break Rex Bridgeforth's 2004 school record of 23-5 1/2 by season's end Season's End are a British band based in Hampshire. ``I'm shooting for 24 feet this year,'' said the outgoing Harrison. ``Yes sir, I expect to compete in (the state finals) this year and next. I've been working hard every day for this.''

For Harrison to become California's top leaper, he will have to knock off to cease, as from work; to desist.

. The University of Oregon-bound Crenshaw is a standout in football like Harrison.

``(Harrison) is a football kid, so he has had to do a lot on his own to compete at this level,'' coach Brian Fitzgerald said. ``I'm not surprised to see some of the results he's had this year. He's had some good coaching, but you cannot teach ballistic ability.''

Although not as experienced in the triple jump, Harrison's mark of 45-3 in that event Saturday is second-best in the area this season.

``I'm still raw in the triple jump,'' Harrison said. ``I need to get better on the second phase.''

Harrison insists he will continue to improve.

``Before the season started I was (long) jumping 23-4,'' Harrison said. ``But it was such a high mark that nobody really believed me. They thought it was wind aided or something. I just had to go out and prove it.''

--Healthy, and jumping again: Harrison is not the only long jumper making a mark at Rio Mesa High of Oxnard.

Reid, injured as a sophomore while playing volleyball, has had success jumping off her right foot this season as opposed to her more natural left.

``It was really tough missing my junior season,'' said Reid, whose brother, Philip Reid, was one of the best distance runners in area history. ``I've been competing in track and field every year since I was five years old.''

Reid, who long jumped 19-4 as a sophomore, believes she can regain her top form by season's end.

``My goals are to get back into to 19s in the long jump and qualify for the state finals before I graduate,'' she said.

--Long-jump champ to miss season: Senior Derrick Smith, a long-jump standout at Colony High of Ontario, will miss the rest of the season after dislocating his right leg Saturday night in an auto accident.

He did not sustain any fractures or ligament damage in the accident and doctors say he should make a full recovery.
