TPL releases urban study results.


On the heels of May's Urban Park and Recreation Summit, the Trust of Public Land, one of the cooperating groups of the event, released a study of urban park systems that found that the 56 largest cities in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  have a combined total of 745,000 acres of parkland.

In addition, the study found that Jacksonville, Fla., has the largest park system with 126 acres of parkland for every 1,000 residents--98,000 acres total. A number of other cities devote a high percentage of land to parks and open space, including San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay. , Calif. (22 percent of land area), Washington, D.C. (19.7 percent), San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden , Calif. Central Park in New York City is the nation's most visited city park with 25 million annual visitors. The largest city park in the nation is the 24,000-acre Franklin Mountain State Park in El Paso, Texas.

The study is the result of eight months of intensive study by TPL's Center for City Park Excellence, the nation's leading source of data on urban park systems.
