 TOYOTA REPORTS OCTOBER MONTH-END SALES
TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Toyota Motor Sales

(TMS), U.S.A. Inc. today reported its October 1992 sales, and the company's executive vice president predicted consumer confidence will return now that the uncertainty of an election year has passed.
"With the elections over, consumers can go about their purchase decisions, and the country can get on with the economic recovery," said Yale Gieszl, TMS executive vice president of sales and operations.
"We look forward to working with the new administration and the 103rd Congress to assure continued consideration of consumer interests and realization of the substantial and positive impact of international automotive companies on the U.S. economy and American society," Gieszl said.
Despite consumer caution preceding the November election, Toyota noted some sales highlights in October. U.S.-built Camry sales of 17,884 increased 44.9 percent over the previous October period, compact pickup truck sales of 16,482 surged 14.9 percent, and Lexus posted 74,922 car sales through October 1992 -- more than the luxury- car division sold in all of calendar-year 1991.
Toyota's total U.S. vehicle sales for October 1992 were 80,553, down 11.3 percent from October 1991. Calendar year-to-date (CYTD) sales at 854,199 represent a 0.4-percent increase over the same period last year.
Toyota Division sold 72,890 vehicles in October 1992, down 12.1 percent from October 1991. Lexus Division reported October 1992 sales of 7,663, down 3.7 percent.
In October, exports of Toyota's North American-built cars increased 149.6 percent to 6,011. CYTD 1992 North American-built car exports of 29,506 represent a 69-percent increase over CYTD 1991. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Inc., the Georgetown, Ky.-based facility that makes Camry sedans and wagons, is Kentucky's No. 1 exporter. New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI), a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors in Fremont, Calif., makes Corollas for export as well as the U.S. market.
