TOYOTA PLANT IN KENTUCKY PRODUCES MILLIONTH CAMRY; ANNOUNCES THAT IT WILL BUILD NEW FLAGSHIP CAR

GEORGETOWN, Ky., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Escorted by a marching band and pom-pom waving team members, the one-millionth American-made Toyota Camry rolled off the line today at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, U.S.A., Inc. (TMM).
But the plant's 4,700 team members celebrated more than this milestone. In its five-year history, TMM has been recognized as one of the highest quality auto plants in North America. And Toyota has confirmed that TMM will build its new flagship car, the Avalon, starting with the 1995 model year.
In August, TMM was recognized by J.D. Power and Associates as the best quality auto plant in North America, marking the second time since 1990 that TMM team members have earned the Gold Plant Quality Award. The plant earned the silver and bronze awards in 1991 and 1992, respectively.
TMM will be the only Toyota plant producing the Avalon, which is bigger than the Camry. Production is projected to begin in the fall of 1994 in the expansion plant under construction behind the current facility.
"Reaching one million Camrys is indeed an impressive achievement. But the greatest achievement is that our team has reached this milestone while still making quality the number one goal," said Fujio Cho, TMM president and CEO. "And we will be working very hard to assure that quality gets even better when we are making both the Camry and the Avalon."
 J. Davis Illingworth, Toyota Motor Sales group vice president of the Toyota Division, emphasized how important the Kentucky facility is to Toyota's strength in the United States while speaking during a team member celebration at TMM.
"The one-millionth Georgetown-built Camry is an important milestone because it underscores the partnership between TMM and TMS. We look to this plant for world-class products and TMM relies on us to sell their products with professionalism and integrity," said Illingworth.
The Camry is Toyota's best-selling vehicle in the United States with over 286,000 sold in 1992. The Camry is one of the top selling cars in America, with sales projected to exceed 300,000 this year, for the first time ever.
TMM will begin production in its expansion plant by March 1994, which will bring total capacity to about 400,000 vehicles annually. The Georgetown facility also exports Camry sedans, station wagons and coupes to several foreign markets, including Japan.
Annual purchases from 174 U.S. suppliers have reached over $1.5 billion.
