TOWER Technology Transforms New Zealand Patient Record System; TOWER IDM Provides Clinical Staff with Instant, Multi-Site Access to Over 500,000 Electronic Patient Folders.

Business/Technology Editors

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 12, 2002

TOWER Technology announced that Auckland District Health Board (ADHB ADHB Auckland District Health Board (New Zealand) ) is installing TOWER Technology's Clinical Record Information System (CRIS). Built on TOWER IDM (1) See identity management.

(2) (Integrated Device Manufacturer) A company that performs every step of the chip-making process, including design, manufacture, test and packaging. Examples of IDMs are Intel, AMD, Motorola, IBM, TI and Lucent.
(TM), TOWER's award-winning document and content processing system, TOWER CRIS(TM) replaces a paper-based patient record system across four hospitals and will provide clinical staff within New Zealand's largest District Health Board with instant, multi-site, electronic access to over 13 million images that comprise 500,000 individual electronic patient folders.

In addition to substantial gains in efficient records management and improved patient record access, TOWER CRIS will provide ADHB with building construction cost savings and increased space availability. TOWER CRIS also offers significant improvement in patient record security and provides for complete system recovery in the event of a disaster at the primary production site.

TOWER CRIS will streamline ADHB's record keeping facilities by integrating documents from four major hospitals into one centralized system In telecommunications, a centralized system is one in which most communications are routed through one or more major central hubs. Such a system allows certain functions to be concentrated in the system's hubs, freeing up resources in the peripheral units. . TOWER CRIS will manage the 8 million new image pages generated each year and a further 4-5 million pages in backfile scanning of older records.

, managing director for TOWER Technology Australia, CRIS provides ADHB with the benefits of electronic patient records without the associated costs and change in management issues.

"There is no need for clinical staff to undergo extensive training or significantly change the way they work. Documents, in their broadest possible definition, are captured during the patient's time at a hospital and are instantly made available for review from the TOWER central Content Repository through a single user interface," says Jones.

Documents created electronically from desktop applications, from Web sessions, e-Mail, or from scanned or faxed paper documents are filed in the patient's digital folder. Copies of electronic reports and results such as radiology radiology, branch of medicine specializing in the use of X rays, gamma rays, radioactive isotopes, and other forms of radiation in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.  and pathology are automatically downloaded and filed against patient records immediately.

Dr Nigel Murray, general manager, Health Services health services Managed care The benefits covered under a health contract  Delivery Plan believes TOWER CRIS encourages sharing of paperless information by individual clinicians, the four hospitals and community centers, and is a significant step towards a complete electronic patient record.

"TOWER CRIS provides ADHB staff with instant access to documents that would previously have taken some time to obtain, particularly if all or part of the patient information was at another hospital. It would have meant finding paper records then faxing or couriering the information. This inefficient practice and waste of crucial time can now be avoided."

"Electronic access of electronic records means any number of authorized staff can see the latest patient information simultaneously, and view it after hours Adv. 1. after hours - not during regular hours; "he often worked after hours" , either within the hospital or remotely via the Web. For the ADHB, TOWER CRIS has provided huge savings in construction and design of new hospital buildings that were required as part of the Health Services Delivery Plan.

"TOWER CRIS enabled us to design a new hospital with a greater focus on patient needs rather than on storage facilities - we no longer need an extra level in the building just to store patient records," said Dr. Murray.

TOWER CRIS provides the hospital with 24/7 access to paperless patient records. The system continuously archives documents to a disaster recovery site during the day. In the event of a system outage out·age
