Two trips to Alaska take different routes, one focusing on outdoor adventure and the other on the history of the gold rush.

A six-day, five-night trek in Alaska includes backpacking along a ridge overlooking Denali National Park, three days of rafting and camping on the Tazlina River in the Chugach Mountains and three days of hiking in the Talkeetna Mountains.

Sponsored by Alaska Wilderness Journeys, the Raft, Roadhouse and Trek trip is $1,695 per person and includes transfers from Anchorage, meals, tents and sleeping bags, as well as two nights' lodgings - one night at Caribou Lodge and another at a bed-and-breakfast in the Talkeetna Mountains. A 14-day Artic Gold Rush tour offered by Maupintour begins in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, where prospectors started their trek to the gold fields and takes in Dawson City, Eagle Plains and Inuvik, as well as a bison sanctuary and an Eskimo village. It also includes a trip on the White Pass and Yukon Railway in Skagway. Cost is $2,990 per person, double occupancy, and includes accommodations, most meals, sightseeing and guide. Goddard on safari: Anthropologist John Goddard will lead a safari through the game reserves of Kenya June 23-July 6.

Goddard, the first man to explore the length of the Nile and to follow the Congo River, will lead participants to the Masai Mara and Samburu Game Reserves to see zebra, wildebeest, lions and giraffes. A visit will also be made to Lake Nakuru, known for its thousands of pink flamingoes.

Cost is $3,995 per person, double occupancy, including air fare from Los Angeles, deluxe accommodations, most meals and guided game-viewing. Information: [phone].

Anasazi adventure: An exploration of the land and culture of the Kayenta, a branch of the Anasazi culture, will be featured on a trek through southern Utah and northern Arizona April 27-May 3.

Sponsored by Crow Canyon Archaeological Center in Colorado, the trip will feature hikes and horseback rides to remote areas, including an ancient rock shelter, a Hopi village (the Hopi people trace their ancestry to the Kayenta region) and a 35-room cliff dwelling shelter. Cost is $1,395 per person, double occupancy, and includes most meals, accommodations and transportation. Single supplement is $230. Air fare to Cortez, Colo., where the trip begins, is not included. Southern gardens: A spring tour of Southern homes and gardens in Georgia and the Carolinas will feature visits to such places as Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Little White House in Warm Springs, Ga., and Savannah and Charleston's annual home and garden tours.

Offered by STEP Inc., a Palos Verdes adult-education program, the trip can be either a 15-day tour March 31-April 14 or a 10-day tour April 5-14.
