TOURNEY STILL HAS STAR POWER.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

CARSON - There's a big painting of Serena Williams Serena Jameka Williams, (born September 26, 1981) is an American former World No. 1 ranked female tennis player who has won eight Grand Slam singles titles and an Olympic gold medal in women's doubles.[1].  on the side of a building just off the 405 freeway in Carson to advertise the JPMorgan Chase JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM TYO: 8634 ) is one of the oldest financial services firms in the world. The company, headquartered in New York City, is one of the leaders in investment banking, financial services, asset and wealth management and private equity. With assets of $1.  Open women's tennis tournament that begins today.

Williams is also featured prominently on the Web site for the tournament, with a large close-up of her famous face and powerful shoulders in the foreground.

There's just one problem: Williams won't be at the JPMorgan Chase Open. She dropped out Friday with an injury, along with the world's No. 1-ranked player, Lindsay Davenport Lindsay Ann Davenport (born June 8 1976 in Palos Verdes, California) is a former World No. 1 American professional female tennis champion. She has won three Grand Slam singles tournaments: the 1998 U.S. Open, 1999 Wimbledon, and the 2000 Australian Open. .

It's notable that even with two crippling losses just before the tournament is to begin, the JPMorgan Chase Open should still offer plenty of entertainment for tennis fans.

Despite the losses of Williams and Davenport, and without seventh-seed Vera Zvonareva Vera Zvonareva (pronunciation: VEH-ruh zvon-a-RYOH-vuh, Russian: Вера Звонарёва (listen   of Russia, who was a late scratch Sunday, the tournament will feature five of the top 10 players in the world headlined by No. 2 Maria Sharapova Maria Yuryevna Sharapova (Russian: Мари́я Ю́рьевна Шара́пова listen , the 2004 Wimbledon champion.

``We are still fortunate that our fans will have the opportunity to come to this year's JPMorgan Chase Open to watch great tennis being played by our outstanding field which still features so many of the tour's most popular players,'' tournament director Bill Peterson William E. "Bill" Peterson (born 1920; died August 5, 1993) was an American football coach. His career included head coaching stops at Florida State, Rice University and with the Houston Oilers.  said.

What the tournament won't have is any notable American players, a direct result of the withdrawal of Williams and Davenport, two Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  natives.

There's a distinct Russian flavor to the tournament with Sharapova, No. 4 Svetlana Kuznetsova, No. 6 Elena Dementieva and No. 9 Nadia Petrova accounting for four of the five ranked top 10 players at the event.

Only No. 10 Kim Clijsters of Belgium, the 2003 champion, breaks up the Russian stronghold.

``There must be something in the water here because I have always enjoyed playing here,'' said Clijsters, who took over the world's No. 1 ranking with her title in 2003. ``I have always had a great time, on the court as well as off the court, and I just feel comfortable here.''

The JPMorgan Chase Open offers many giveaways and entertainment offerings for fans. The most popular is the bobblehead giveaway, in which the first 5,000 fans in attendance for Friday's 8 p.m. session will receive the first Sharapova bobblehead doll ever in production.
