HIGHLANDERS RIDING HIGH Granada Hills coach James Mulcahy was so frustrated with his team that he canceled the final weeks of the Highlanders' winter-league schedule to use the time for intrasquad games. The move produced better results than Mulcahy imagined. Granada Hills has responded by getting off to one of the program's best starts in recent memory - and one of the best in the area this season. The Highlanders claimed berths in upcoming championship games of the first two tournaments they entered this season, the Hamilton of Los Angeles tournament and the Daily News Invitational. ``We didn't have a lot of experience returning, and we didn't win a lot of games during the summer or winter ...,'' said Mulcahy, whose team finished fourth in the West Valley League last season. ``This kind of start is exactly what we needed to build some confidence.'' Granada Hills started the season 7-0 and was 9-3 entering a game Thursday at the RBI tournament. ``Our attitude on the field just unbelievably improved the last few months,'' Mulcahy said. ``They're playing together as a team. And another big part of it is we just kept giving the young players the repetitions, and now they're feeling comfortable out there.'' Thomas McKenna, Daniel Nemoy, Jacon King and Daniel Weingart are the leading hitters for a team that entered the week with a .339 batting average and 22 stolen bases.
