Police had withheld information about the April 2004 attack on the Maltese Maltese (môltēz`), breed of very small toy dog of obscure origin that was widely popular in Europe by the beginning of the 19th cent. It stands about 5 in. (12.7 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 2 to 7 lb (0.9–1.4 kg). dog until they verified it was by the same dog that on Tuesday killed 16-month-old Cassandra Cassandra (kəsăn`drə), in Greek legend, Trojan princess, daughter of Priam and Hecuba. She was given the power of prophecy by Apollo, but because she would not accept him as a lover, he changed her blessing to a curse, causing her prophecies never to be believed. Garcia and injured her mother. Police had said Wednesday that the Rottweiler had no known history of aggression. ``From the onset of the investigation we have known about a Rottweiler attacking and killing a Maltese dog,'' said Sgt. Tom Lorenz of the Glendale Police Department. ``Through the investigation we're able to determine - through police records and the records at the shelter - ... that this is the same dog involved in the child attack the other day.'' The dog will be euthanized next week after being checked for rabies. Police also confirmed Thursday that the dog attacked when the toddler started crying as her mother was holding a garden hose and filling the dog's steel water bowl. The dog bit Blanca Garcia, 28, on the arm, snatched away Cassandra and mauled her. Blanca Garcia was housesitting at her parents' home in the 2300 block of Via Saldivar. ``We have interviewed the grandmother and grandfather of the child,'' Lorenz said. ``The grandfather is the owner of the dog. Both of them are extremely devastated. Our hearts go out to the family in this time of mourning.'' The Rottweiler, a male, and a female Rottweiler from the same property got loose and ganged up on the Maltese in a 2004 attack. The owner of the Maltese dropped the matter and did not want any more investigation at the time, said Ricky Whitman, spokeswoman for the Pasadena Humane Society. Dogs involved in fatal attacks on other dogs are not always euthanized, she added. ``It doesn't follow that, when a dog does that, it will translate to or accelerate to biting humans or anything like that,'' Whitman said.
