TOSHIBA DEBUTS ITS NEW 8-BIT MICROCONTROLLER SERIES; Higher Performance MCUs Offer Increased Address Space.SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 17, 1996--Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC TAEC Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. TAEC Thailand Atomic Energy Commission ) today introduced its new 8-bit TLCS-870 microcontroller (MCU (1) (MicroController Unit) A computer on a single chip. See microcontroller. (2) (Multipoint Control Unit) A device that is used to moderate a videoconference of three or more end points (users at computers or groups of users ) series, the 870X Series. The new series is based on Toshiba's 870X core which offers higher performance and increased address space than any of its current 8-bit MCUs. "This new product series complements Toshiba's existing 8-bit line of microcontrollers," said Erich Volk, market development specialist for Toshiba's microcomputer products. "It fills a gap in Toshiba's 8-bit MCU line by offering a high-performance, low cost 8-bit at twice the performance than that of existing TLCS-870 devices and at a price point lower than 16-bit devices." Designers requiring more performance and code space need not move up to a 16-bit MCU with inherent code and architectural changes. The new MCUs are offered in a variety of different versions, including on-board ROM and RAM versions, a ROMless and on-board RAM version, and a one-time programmable (OTP (1) (One Time Programmable) Refers to programming content or logic into chips such as EPROMs and EEPROMs, which cannot be reversed. See antifuse. (2) (One Time P ) version. The on-board ROM and RAM versions contain 24 to 32 kilobytes (KB) of ROM and 1KB of RAM. The ROMless version contains 512 bytes (B) of on-board RAM, while the OTP version contains 64KB of on-board ROM and 2KB of on-board RAM. Applications for the 870X Series of devices are geared towards industrial control, hand held products, instrumentation, point-of-sale equipment, consumer products and telecommunications. In particular the on-board ROM and RAM devices are well suited for three-phased motor control for applications such as air conditioners and appliances which include washers and dryers. The devices using external ROM are targeted towards more complex applications where large data and code space is required at a lower cost than typical 16-bit MCUs. These applications include industrial control products, general consumer, office automation products and high-end audio High-end audio is a term used to describe equipment that is purported by the manufacturers to be the best, regardless of the price. Definition of 'high-end' High-end audio and video products such as televisions and VCRs. The new devices contain a number of architectural features including 16 register banks for fast context switching Same as task switching. , instruction pre-fetch, a 20-bit stack pointer An address that identifies the location of the most recent item placed on the stack. (architecture, programming) stack pointer - (SP) A register or variable pointing to the top of a stack. over the entire memory space, 23 addressing modes, 20-bit program counter and up to five power saving modes (STOP, SLOW, IDLE1, IDLE2 and SLEEP modes). The MCUs also contain 842 basic machine instructions of 181 type variations. The instructions are 1 byte to 6 bytes of object code in length and the instruction set is compatible with Toshiba's TLCS-870 family. The 870X Series has a wide range of operating voltage from 2.7 to 5.5 volts (V) at a maximum of 8 megahertz One million cycles per second. See MHz. MegaHertz - (MHz) Millions of cycles per second. The unit of frequency used to measure the clock rate of modern digital logic, including microprocessors. (MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. ) clock rate and 4.5V to 5.5V at a maximum of 16MHz clock rate. The typical standby current is 0.5 microamperes, while the typical operating current is 6 to 32 milliamperes (mA).
