TOPPS ANNOUNCES IT WILL REPORT NET LOSS FOR FOURTH QUARTER

NEW YORK, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Topps Company, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: TOPP) today announced that shipments of sports cards during the fourth quarter ending Feb. 27, 1993, will be significantly lower than the company anticipated. As a result of lower shipments as well as the company's decision to increase provisions for obsolescence and returns, the company will report a net loss for its fourth quarter.
Arthur T. Shorin, chairman, said: "Sports card collecting will continue as long as professional sports remain popular. However, we see this development as a market contraction rather than a seasonal fluctuation. The speculative frenzy of the last few years is giving way to a hobby reflecting true collector interest, and we are positioning the company to operate effectively and profitably going forward in this new environment."
Topps is well known for its collectible picture products, which feature sports and other themes, its Bazooka brand bubble gum and entertaining candy products.
