TOP SOURCE ARC SAFETY TECHNOLOGY SUCCESSFULLY TESTED
WITH AIR BAG BY DETROIT AUTOMAKER
DETROIT, May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Top Source, Inc. (AMEX: TPS.EC) said today that frontal passenger vehicle crash tests recently conducted by a Detroit automaker using the ARC safety seat technology in conjunction with only an air bag (no seat belt) generated injury criteria levels well within Federal safety standards. The ARC safety seat technology is exclusively licensed to Top Source by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
A Detroit automaker conducted a vehicle sled test using the ARC (accelerated restraint curve) seat safety technology earlier in May, according to Top Source chairman Stuart Landow. The ARC technology, a controlled occupant seat motion upon frontal crash impact, prevents the occupant from "submarining" under the air bag into the vehicle's instrument panel. The sled test, an automotive test method, uses a dummy and simulates frontal crashes, measuring the resulting injuries.
Landow said the test was conducted as part of a Top Source contract with a major Detroit automaker and its seat supplier. The dummy was restrained only by the air bag and the ARC seat motion, which are both passive restraints, requiring no action by the occupant. Knee bolsters, which are normally built into the instrument panel to restrain the lower torso upon impact, were removed for this test.
"We're pleased that the test went so well," said Landow. "This is a major milestone for our company, representing the culmination of several years and several million dollars of research and development. We know that air bags are the passive restraint for vehicles in the immediate future. And, we now believe that air bags, used in conjunction with our ARC technology, may enable automakers to eliminate the awkward, but necessary-until-now, knee bolsters. We believe our ARC technology, used with the air bag, is the best solution for passive restraint systems in the near future."
