WRITER HONORED: Daily News outdoors editor Brett Pauly was presented with two newspaper writing awards Sunday by the Outdoors Writers Association of California. Pauly was judged winner of the best column category for his profile of jackpot hustlers. He also won for the best news report for a piece on the impact of El Nino on local ocean fish. The awards were announced at the group's spring conference at Bass Lake Inn in Madera County.

USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  PROBE CONTINUES: The Pacific-10 Conference questioned USC officials, wide receiver Mike Bastianelli and former director of tutoring services Christopher Cairney during a hearing Monday to determine if USC took the appropriate action regarding impropriety in its Student Athlete Academic Services office. The four-member compliance committee met for about six hours in Palo Alto, then deliberated to decide whether to accept USC's conclusions. USC fired Cairney last month as part of the conclusion to its investigation. The committee will announce its recommendation next month.
